Buaya

Crocodile

One of the four principal ground arts within SBL. Buaya develops the posterior core and connects the upper and lower body through slow, continuous movement. It also develops sensitivity, body control and positional pressure.

The words that form the name Silat Buka Lingkaran. The Open Circle reflects fluidity, connection and movement through different ranges and angles. It also represents the continuing nature of learning and development within the art.

Twisting / Coiling

A foundational principle of SBL involving twisting and coiling body movement. Gelek helps connect the upper and lower body and supports striking, evasion, changes of angle and transitions.

Tiger

One of the four principal SBL ground arts. Harimau develops direct, forceful and dynamic ground movement, including explosive movement, striking from different angles and takedown-related movement.

Form / Structured Movement

Structured sequences used within Silat to develop movement, technique, coordination and understanding. Jurus provide a framework for exploring principles before developing freer application.

Curved Blade

A traditional curved-blade weapon associated with Southeast Asian martial arts. Within SBL it is studied as part of progressive weapons training to develop movement, distance, timing, awareness and control.

Flower Dance

The softer and more expressive aspect of Silat. Kembangan uses relaxed, flowing movement to develop balance, rhythm, fluidity, concentration, focus, coordination and awareness.

Cat

One of the four principal SBL ground arts. Kucing develops flexibility, agility and explosive ground movement, together with ground striking, rolling, falling and recovery.

Horse Stance

A fundamental stance used to develop balance, structure and stability. Within SBL it supports upright movement rather than being treated simply as a fixed position.

Kura-Kura

Turtle

One of the four principal SBL ground arts. Kura-Kura develops defensive positioning and escape from the vulnerable position of lying fully on the back, with particular emphasis on abdominal conditioning and time under tension.

Five Footwork

The core five-footwork structure used in SBL upright fighting. It develops entries, side-stepping and evasion, retreating, repositioning, range and movement in relation to multiple attackers.
